Widespread power outages reported in Akron and Summit, Portage, Stark

Almost 26,000 Ohio residents served by FirstEnergy were without power late this afternoon after overnight storms blew through the region.

According to FirstEnergy, almost 19,000 Summit County customers were still affected by the widespread power outage as of 4:45 p.m. May 17.

FirstEnergy spokesperson Jennifer Young said overnight storms most heavily affected Summit, Stark and Portage counties in Northeast Ohio. A total of 121,000 people lost power, she said.

“What we’re seeing is there’s a lot of large tree damage, a lot of large trees have come down on power lines,” Young said.

Young said the majority of customers should see power restored before 3 p.m. Monday, May 19. Many will see their power restored before then, she said.

If wind gusts get over 40 mph, Young said, crews can’t be lifted into the air to fix lines, but she said gusts were expected to stay below that for the remainder of the weekend. Extra crews have come in from…
