Some visitors to the US will have to post bonds of up to $15,000 before travelling for tourism or business under President Trump’s plans to crack down on illegal immigration.
The state department has announced a year-long pilot programme to deter visitors to the US from countries whose nationals often overstay their visas, such as Chad, Equatorial Guinea and Myanmar.
Those three countries had the highest rates of people overstaying their visas in 2023, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Other countries in the top ten included Haiti, Laos and the Republic of Congo. Travellers from the UK and other countries that are part of the US visa waiver programme will not be affected.
The full list of countries that will be subject to the visa restrictions will be published by the state department soon. It may change over the course of the pilot, which starts on August 20.
