Filling up hydrogen tanks for fuel-cell cars and hydrogen combustion engines can be tough. You need to transfer a high-pressure gas from one tank to another. Due to the pressure, there are possibilities of leaks. And since it’s cold, the nozzle can freeze up completely. Toyota is investigating the possibility of using a swappable tank, one that can be removed and refilled separately from the vehicle, letting the station fill it up for later. But that also causes problems.
Considering hydrogen still isn’t a readily available, cost-effective fuel source due in no small part to these issues (not to mention a nearly nonexistent refueling infrastructure), Toyota is certainly spending a lot of time trying to solve problems that may never exist.
