San Anselmo selects site for solar project

San Anselmo’s solar energy project will be installed in a parking lot just north of Town Hall.

The Town Council voted unanimously on Nov. 12 to select the parking lot at Kientz Lane and Magnolia Avenue to house its solar panel grid. The council had also considered the Town Hall parking lot south of Magnolia Avenue.

“This just makes sense economically,” said Mayor Eileen Burke. “I think it’s a real step forward for us. … That’s part of our job, to plan for the future.”

The project will consist of a solar photovoltaic system, a battery energy storage system and a microgrid system to supply energy during extreme weather and prescribed blackouts.

Matthew Ferrer, an assistant engineer, said the public showed support for the site north of Magnolia Avenue. Town engineering staff installed story poles at the proposed sites with digital codes that linked to an online survey. An in-person community meeting also featured renderings…
