TRI-CITIES, Wash.-Did you get a new tool, toy or maybe even an electric bike for Christmas?

Remember some lithium ion battery safety tips before charging and enjoying your gifts to ensure the excitement of the season lasts into the new year.

Lithium ion batteries power myriad toys, tools and devices, from smart phones to smoke alarms and cars, however, in rare cases they can cause fires or explosions.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, lithium ion batteries store a large amount of energy in a small space and fires can occur if they are used the wrong way or are defective.

Some signs of problems with your lithium ion battery include, a burning odor, changes in color or shape, leaking or odd noises.
