The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) released an update this week on its ongoing investigation into the October gas leak at the PEMEX Deer Park facility that resulted in the death of two contract workers.
According to the update, the two workers died from hydrogen sulfide poisoning and were in two separate locations approximately 250 feet apart. One collapsed immediately and the other died while trying to escape, federal investigators reported.
“The other boilermaker collapsed near the top of the ladder and was found by emergency responders with his respirator mask lying next to him, fatally injured from hydrogen sulfide poisoning,” the CSB said in its update. “While attempting to evacuate, one of the workers lost consciousness and fell while descending a caged ladder.
