Old PA coal plant to become a massive natural gas data center

The Homer City power plant, a retired coal-fired facility located about 50 miles east of Pittsburgh, will see new life as the nation’s largest natural gas-powered data center, according to an announcement this week. 

The groups behind the $10 billion project said the campus will span more than 3,200 acres and will help generate the power needed for artificial intelligence and advanced computing technologies. 

“This project will honor Homer City’s place in the proud history of Pennsylvania energy generation, while accelerating the state and local community’s ability to meet the needs of a rapidly shifting energy landscape,” WIlliam Wexler, president and CEO of Homer City Redevelopment, said in a prepared statement.
