Morocco’s National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) signed an agreement with local energy company Nareva and American technology firm GE Vernova on January 30th, according to Reuters.
The deal aims to explore the feasibility of converting a 99-megawatt power plant in Laayoune to run on green hydrogen, replacing its current fuel source.
«GE Vernova will help the Laayoune plant deliver electricity generated using 100% green hydrogen produced at Nareva’s Laayoune wind farm», the companies said in a joint statement. This project aligns with Morocco’s ambitious goal of increasing its renewable energy capacity from 40% to 52% by 2030.
The feasibility study is expected to take two years. Currently, 70% of Morocco’s electricity comes from coal, highlighting the potential impact of this initiative.
