Maine energy plan looks to balance price, reliability

AUGUSTA — A new state energy plan lays out a roadmap for finding ways to make energy more affordable, reliable and clean for decades to come.

The Governor’s Energy Office released the plan earlier this month as part of a push to get to 100% clean electricity by 2040, continue to reduce the number of Maine homes that use heating oil and make the electric grid more resilient in the face of powerful storms.

One major goal — getting 3,000 megawatts of offshore wind installed by 2040 — is now more uncertain, given an executive order signed by President Donald Trump this week that temporarily halts offshore wind lease sales in federal waters and pauses other approvals.

In a statement, the state energy office said that the executive orders will not impact existing offshore wind leases, such as the research array planned for the Gulf of Maine.
