Letter: Geothermal energy offers an alternative path – Grand Forks Herald

In response to Sen. John Hoeven’s commentary in the Aug. 23 edition of the Herald, I believe North Dakota should be “cracking the code” on geothermal energy as part of a serious energy strategy.

Our state has long relied on coal and natural gas, but the economics are shifting in ways that cannot be ignored. The Inflation Reduction Act’s Investment and Production Tax Credits support renewable energy and carbon capture development, helping maintain a more competitive energy market. While these incentives don’t directly control fossil fuel prices, they enable lower-cost clean energy alternatives that can ease upward pressure on electricity costs. Costs could rise further as carbon capture systems and CO2 pipelines are added to the grid, with 45Q tax credits transferring part of the expense to taxpayers.
