Construction has commenced on the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT), set to become the nation’s largest offshore wind port, marking a significant milestone in New York’s clean energy transition. Led by Governor Kathy Hochul, Mayor Eric Adams and Equinor Wind US President Molly Morris, this project is poised to propel the state toward its Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) objective of developing 9,000 megawatts of offshore wind capacity by 2035.
The initiative is expected to generate over 1,000 construction jobs, breathing new life into the historic SBMT, a 73-acre site set to serve as a state-of-the-art facility for offshore wind operations. It will also function as the operations and maintenance hub for the Empire Wind 1 project, which aims to deliver 810 megawatts of renewable energy to New York City, enough to power nearly 500,000 homes in Brooklyn.
