Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. (TSX:IVN, OTCQX:IVPAF), the Canadian mining giant, reached a significant milestone as the first shipment of copper concentrate from its Kamoa-Kakula Copper Complex in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) arrived at the Atlantic Ocean port of Lobito, Angola. The transportation is part of a trial tonnage under a memorandum of understanding signed between Lobito Atlantic International SARL (LAI) and Kamoa Copper in August 2023.
The Lobito Atlantic Railway Corridor, extending 1,289 kilometers from the DRC Copperbelt to Lobito, Angola, facilitated the historic shipment. This rail link is set to transform the logistics landscape, connecting the Central African Copperbelt to global markets efficiently. The trial, involving the transportation of up to 10,000 tonnes of copper concentrate, aims to collect data on greenhouse gas savings, transit times, operating costs, and other factors.
