House Rep. Demands Answers on Why Trump Pardoned Billionaire Crypto Mogul

Donald Trump’s recent pardon of Binance founder Changpeng Zhao has drawn the scrutiny of lawmakers in Congress, with a top Democratic lawmaker demanding answers on Friday.

A letter to the White House from Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) has focused on Trump’s pardon of the billionaire crypto mogul, who pleaded guilty in 2023 to violating anti-money laundering rules.

The founder of the world’s largest crypto exchange admitted to violating the US Bank Secrecy Act by failing to implement an effective anti-money-laundering program to prevent illicit transactions.

The Ranking Member of the United States House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, Garcia described Trump’s decision to pardon Zhao as “shocking and unjustified.” He also raised questions around the Trump family’s business ties to Binance.
