The move is aimed at enhancing Volt’s graphite resources for use in lithium-ion batteries and expanding its sustainable energy footprint in North America, the company said in a separate statement.
The two companies have a track record of working together. Volt created a lithium-ion battery with materials from the Berkwood graphite project using its proprietary processing technology and without needing water, chemicals or reagents.
Graphite is a critical mineral that makes up most of the anode in the lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage technologies. It is on most countries’ critical minerals lists, including Canada’s.
