Escalating Lithium Battery Fires Contribute to Soaring NYC Fire Fatalities

The surge in fire fatalities linked to defective lithium batteries in New York City has contributed to a devastating milestone not seen in two decades: over 100 deaths in one year. In 2023, the city reported a total of 106 fire-related fatalities, with 18 of these deaths directly attributed to lithium battery fires, predominantly those used in e-bikes. This alarming figure surpasses the previous year’s count and marks the highest number since 2004. There is a stark increase in fire deaths compared to the 66 fatalities recorded in 2019, reflecting a 60 percent rise that coincides with the growing popularity of e-bikes for deliveries.
