Dane Co. detectives recover $4k for victim in cryptocurrency scam

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Dane County Sheriff’s Office detectives recovered thousands of dollars for a victim in an online cryptocurrency scam that happened earlier this year.

The agency recounted Thursday how, in February, the victim used a sponsored, third-party link on what he thought was a legitimate website to pay for a streaming service.

The fraudulent link caused the victim’s bank account to become compromised, and someone overseas gained access to the individual’s cell phone and personal information. Dane Co. detectives said the scammer got into the victim’s account to transfer funds using cryptocurrency, and moved thousands of dollars over.

Fast-forwarding to June 9, Dane Co. Sheriff’s Office said a detective worked with the Wisconsin Department of Justice- Division of Criminal Investigation to find and return some of the lost funds. Officials say the cryptocurrency portion recovered is valued at $4,000.
