Colombia will restructure its energy ministry planning unit as the government seeks to accelerate efforts to decarbonize the electric power grid.
President Gustavo Petro approved two decrees which pave the way for UPME, as the unit is known, to hire staff with expertise in more than 15 nascent energy segments.
The overhaul will include the establishment of a sub-committee that will be charged with coordinating sectorial information that can be used as an input for planning purposes.
“We welcome this support for our work as a planning entity for the mining and energy sectors,” UPME general director Adrian Correa said in statement.
“We are aware that without planning there is no transition, and that the exercise of democratizing the country’s energy model first involves strengthening its institutions.”
