Birmingham Fire warns about lithium battery safety

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Birmingham Fire and Rescue is issuing a warning about lithium batteries found in devices such as phones, laptops, tablets, and scooters.

These batteries are common in many Christmas gifts, but if not handled properly, they can cause fires.

Battalion Chief Clay Hendon advises that once these items are fully charged, they should be unplugged. Additionally, it’s important to only purchase UL-listed batteries. Never leave batteries charging unattended, and for items like scooters, hoverboards, and electric wheelchairs, pay close attention to where you charge and store them in your home.

“You especially want to make sure you’re not overcharging them,” says Hendon. “You should avoid charging these items inside the home, as this can block your escape path. If a device is charging in a hallway near the front door, that could create a very dangerous situation.”
