Mali has imposed a $10,000 visa bond on U.S. visitors traveling to the West African country.
The country announced the policy for those traveling on business and tourist visas days after the Trump administration made a similar move which targeted Mali and six other countries.
Newsweek reached out to the U.S. Department of State and Mali’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs by email to comment on this story.
Why It Matters
Since assuming office for the second time, President Donald Trump has made cracking down on immigration a major priority. He has vowed to crack down on border security, carry out mass deportations and end federal benefits for people entering the country illegally.
Mali’s reciprocal action shows Trump’s policies will also have an effect on Americans abroad and could discourage travel between the two nations and sour diplomatic relations.
