The Transportation Security Administration has some packing advice for people traveling with a common item.
TSA recently issued an advisory related to special rules that apply to electric toothbrushes. The issue with the electronics – and “anything that buzzes,” according to TSA – are the batteries they use.
“Devices containing lithium metal or lithium ion should be carried in carry-on baggage,” TSA guidelines state. “Most other consumer devices containing batteries are allowed in carry-on and checked baggage.”
Any spare or uninstalled lithium batteries must be placed in a carry-on bag, TSA said.
Lithium batteries are restricted by TSA due to the possibility that they could overheat and cause smoke or fire onboard. Problems with the batteries are becoming increasingly common, with the FAA reporting that in 2023 there was at least one lithium battery-related issue per week aboard aircraft.
