The Transportation Department said Friday it will cancel $679 million in federal funding for a dozen offshore wind projects in the country, including nearly $34 million for the Salem Wind Port Project.
The funding cuts are the latest move President Donald Trump’s campaign to kill renewable energy development in the country, which started when he paused new offshore wind leases on his inauguration day. Earlier this week, Trump halted work on the nearly completed Revolution Wind offshore farm in Rhode Island, a $4 billion project.
“Wasteful, wind projects are using resources that could otherwise go towards revitalizing America’s maritime industry,” said US Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy in a statement Friday. The funding will instead be redirected toward port upgrades and “core infrastructure” related to the country’s shipbuilding capacity.
