ITHACA, N.Y. (WBNG) — At around 7:15 p.m. on Aug. 12, the Ithaca Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a fire in an apartment building.
Emergency dispatchers received multiple reports of a fire on the fourth floor of the building.
Crews worked through the night and into the morning to determine the cause of the fire and found that lithium-ion batteries were involved in the fire’s spread.
No injuries were reported.
Although the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, the Ithaca Fire Department reminded residents about lithium-ion battery safety tips:
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for charging, use and storage.
- Avoid knockoffs, and look for Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or Intertek (ETL) certifications.
- Do not charge batteries under a pillow, or on a couch or bed.
- Store batteries in a cool and dry place; do not place devices in direct sunlight.
