Safety concerns rise around lithium-ion battery fires following Bloomington fire

EAST PEORIA (25News Now) – As more electronic products are powered by lithium-ion batteries, there are some safety concerns about those batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries power devices ranging from e-bikes and cars to smartphones and watches. While generally considered safe, they can be highly flammable and sensitive to high temperatures.

Although there has not been a major increase in battery fires here, Sunday’s fire in Bloomington, alongside last year’s fire at Rivian, does raise some concern.

While Sunday’s fire was contained due to the battery being placed in an oven, local first responders said that not every situation is the same, and it could have easily ended differently.
