In the case of Adam Kadyrov, the son of the Chechen warlord, Ramzan Kadyrov, the apple did not fall far from the tree. The burly 17-year-old shares his father’s thuggish swagger, his love of fast cars and his proclivity for violence.
Adam is the third of Kadyrov’s sons, yet it is increasingly apparent that he is the chosen successor to lead the mountain republic, having in recent months been assigned a slew of titles including secretary of the security council.
At the same time Kadyrov, 48, has expressed a desire to step down amid reports of ill health, leading to speculation that he might be seeking to make way for his teenage son sooner rather than later, carrying on the political dynasty started by his father, Akhmad, who was Chechnya’s president before his assassination in 2004.
