FRANKFURT (dpa-AFX) – The DAX fell slightly in early trading on Monday, dropping below the 24,000-point mark. US President Donald Trump escalated the tariff dispute again over the weekend. He wants to double tariffs on steel imports into the United States from the current 25 percent to 50 percent of the value of the goods.

The German benchmark index was last down 0.20 percent at 23,949 points. The MDax index of medium-sized stocks, on the other hand, rose by 0.44 percent to 30,726 points. The EuroStoxx 50, the leading index for the eurozone, fell by 0.4 percent.

German steel stocks such as Thyssenkrupp, Salzgitter, and Klockner & Co saw only moderate losses. Defense stocks such as Hensoldt, Rheinmetall, and Renk remain in high demand./ajx/stk
