Former U.S. senator and Missouri governor Christopher S. “Kit” Bond died May 13 at age 86. Bond spent 40 years in public service and was known as a “favorite son” of Missouri, Gov. Mike Kehoe said in a statement.

Bond was born in St. Louis in 1939 and grew up in Mexico, Missouri, according to the 2003-2004 Official Manual State of Missouri, known as the “blue book.” He graduated from the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University and received a law degree from the University of Virginia. Bond had a wife, Linda; a son, Sam; and two grandchildren.
In 1969, Bond became the assistant attorney general for Missouri and in 1970, he was elected as state auditor. He became governor in 1972 and served two terms.
