Mining Association of British Columbia president Michael Goehring says red tape is choking a generational opportunity in the province’s critical minerals boom.
Speeding up mine approvals is key to unlocking $36 billion in investment and securing high-paying jobs, he said in an interview. B.C.’s pending Mineral Tenure Act update is to cut red tape and boost certainty in mine approvals.
“We want certainty in the permitting process to be a competitive advantage,” Goehring said during a January industry conference.
He warns that U.S. tariffs might drive Canada into recession and curb mineral exports. Goehring also criticizes a recent university study that shifts blame from provincial delays, pointing to economic factors.
