Colombia’s hydrogen projects set to spark an energy revolution

Despite ongoing challenges, Colombia is on track to have at least 1GW of electrolysis capacity for green hydrogen production by the end of the decade. 

Karen Peralta, the executive director of Colombia’s Andi-Naturgas Hydrogen Chamber, tells BNamericas why the country is poised to become a regional leader in the fledgling industry.

BNamericas: About a year ago, Andi-Naturgas reported that Colombia had 28 hydrogen projects on the table, with seven in the testing phase. Has the number of projects grown in the last year? Are some already in operation?

Peralta: We’re updating this information; however, the mines and energy ministry has just announced that there are around 49 projects. Of these, 13 are being tested, all at pilot scale. The projects that are already in operation are at kilowatt scale, so they’re still very small. Their purpose is to search for or test the technologies and also to do some tests on the final…
