The FTSE 100 held steady after yesterday’s retreat, with engineer Smiths Group (SMIN) tearing ahead on a profit upgrade.
The main market eked out a six-point rise to 8,031 after Wall Street took a breather after US markets soared to new highs following Donald Trump’s decisive victory in the presidential election last week.
European markets were also mostly flat following earlier falls in Asia as Trump’s appointments of policy hawks revived anxieties over tariffs and their impact on world trade.
