The initiative began naming companies that had failed to follow through in August last year. Now, 790 companies are marked as having their “commitment removed”, including 160 UK-based companies.
It is understood that M&S plans to submit a revised net zero plan to the scheme later this year. Some companies, including the retailer, have set a “near term” target, for completion by 2030, which stops short of net zero.
Unilever has previously said it plans to “focus on the near term”. Diageo and IAG were contacted for comment.
Other global companies have ditched the scheme entirely or been cut from it, blaming a lack of clear standards.
