Bonds rise as U.S. stocks slump Tuesday

Shares of exchange-traded funds that hold U.S. bonds were up Tuesday, as Treasury yields fell.

The iShares Core U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF and Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF were each up 0.3% in afternoon trading, according to FactSet data, at last check. Both ETFs invest in Treasurys and other U.S. investment-grade fixed-income securities such as corporate bonds.

Meanwhile, the yield on the 10-Year Treasury note was down about 6 basis points on Tuesday at around 3.85%, FactSet data show, at last check. The 2-year treasury yield was declining about 3 basis points to around 3.88%. Bond yields and prices move in opposite directions.

The U.S. stock market was down sharply Tuesday afternoon, with the S&P 500 index dropping 1.5%, FactSet data show, at last check.
