GM buys enough renewable energy to support three plants, two in Michigan

General Motors Co. on Thursday announced a 15-year renewable energy purchase from NorthStar Clean Energy to supply three U.S. assembly plants — its largest power deal to date.

The purchase from NorthStar’s Newport solar panel project in Newport, Arkansas, will provide electricity to the automaker’s Lansing Delta Township Assembly and Lansing Grand River Assembly plants in Michigan, and the Wentzville Assembly plant in Missouri.

GM said the move is an “important milestone in our goal to be carbon neutral by 2040.”

In 2022, GM said it finalized the energy sourcing agreements required to secure 100% of the energy needed to power all of its U.S. sites with renewable electricity by the end of 2025.

The automaker said Thursday it has the sourcing agreements from 17 renewable energy plants across 11 states.
