Sen. Gillibrand pushes for lithium-ion battery bill to be included

SUNSET PARK AND WASHINGTON, D.C. — E-BIKE SAFETY AND PREVENTING FATAL BLAZES are the focus points of a bill that U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is pushing for inclusion in the Fiscal Year National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). She will hold a press conference on Monday afternoon, July 22, in front of an e-bike shop in southern Brooklyn with State Sen. Iwen Chu and other elected and FDNY officials, including Commissioner Laura Kavanagh and Steve Mei, director of Chinese-American Planning Council Brooklyn Community Services. The bipartisan Setting Consumer Standards for Lithium-Ion Batteries Act would require the Consumer Product Safety Commission to finally establish a mandatory consumer product safety standard for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries used in e-bikes and other micromobility devices to protect against the risk of fires caused by such batteries.
