New beginning: In a major turnaround, the UK is now poised to be the best performing stock market for at least the coming decade, experts say

The British stock market is enduring a ‘Dark Age’ that has seen international and domestic investors pull billions out of UK funds and shares.

In 2023, ordinary UK investors withdrew a staggering £13.6billion from funds that focus on investing in the British stock market, according to the Investment Association (IA). That is the worst level of outflows since comparable records began.

Laith Khalaf, from DIY investment company AJ Bell, says that UK markets are going through a ‘Dark Age’. ‘The scale of withdrawals is absolutely unprecedented,’ he says.

But with interest rates due to fall, foreign businesses bidding big for UK companies and a new British Isa on the horizon, many of the key factors that have deterred investors are now evaporating.
