New York Rolls Out Educational Campaign to Raise Awareness on Lithium-Ion Battery Safety

In response to the rising number of fires linked to lithium-ion batteries, Governor Kathy Hochul has launched an educational campaign to promote safer practices among New Yorkers. The “Buy Safe, Charge Safe” initiative is designed to provide essential information on the responsible purchase, usage, and maintenance of devices powered by these batteries. With over 250 reported fires and numerous injuries and fatalities in New York City alone, the urgency of this campaign is clear.

Starting in February 2024, the campaign will use various advertising channels to reach consumers effectively. It will feature educational components, including ads and a dedicated website, offering New Yorkers access to vital safety resources. This campaign is a branch of Governor Hochul’s broader safety effort, which includes a proposed ban on the sale of unsafe lithium-ion batteries used in micro-mobility devices.
