Spain has made history by producing more than half of its electricity from renewable sources such as wind and solar power in 2023, the national power grid announced on Thursday.
Renewable sources reach record high
AFP reports that according to the Red Electrica Espanola (REE) data, the electricity generated from renewable sources reached nearly 135,000 GWh last year, which is 50.4 percent of the total national energy mix.
This is a record-breaking achievement, as an REE statement said that Spain has crossed the 50 percent mark for renewable electricity for the first time.
The increase in renewable energy production was mainly driven by wind and solar power, the leading energy sources for the second consecutive year.
